My OBU story

Today is Ouachita Baptist University's Founder's Day and they created a "blog about" day in order to celebrate. Here is my OBU story.

My Ouachita story is probably very different from most. I decided to attend OBU my senior year of high school because OBU had offered me a vocal music scholarship. I was so impressed by the music program at Ouachita and esatic even thinking about being a part of it. However, after a semester of majoring in music I knew it was not for me. I eventually switched to Dietetics and Nutrition in hopes of becoming a registered dietitian one day.

Academics is only a part of my experience at Ouachita. My freshman year I tried out for cheerleading and made the team and cheered my freshman, sophomore, and junior years. I loved cheering at OBU. I had the chance to make some great friends and enjoy all the sports of Ouachita.

Ouachita gave me the opportunity to try all kinds of new things like pageants. I had so much fun getting to know other girls and developing life long skills like how to respond in interview situations through experiences like this.

Ouachita also provided me the opportunity to grow in my spiritual life. I will never forget some of the “noondays” that really helped center my mind on Christ. I had the privilege of traveling to Africa with Campus Ministries where we had the chance to go into schools in Africa and teach about Christ. I also took the opportunity to travel to Panama (the country) and hike up the mountains to share Christ with people who had never ever heard of Him before; it was an unbelievable experience that changed my life forever.

My blogging about OBU would not be complete without mentioning the lasting friendships I made during my time there. My freshman year, I joined Chi Delta social club and had the honor of being a Kappa Chi 'lil sis' and there I made lifetime friends! Along with friendships I also learned so much about leadership and responsibility. I enjoyed holding many offices in Chi Delta my favorite being Tiger Tunes director!

The summer before my senior year I met my husband Adam, he lived in Memphis and so we had a long distance relationship (during Tiger Tunes season!) I decided after my first semester as a senior that I did not think I wanted to work in a hospital or be a dietitian and so I decided to transfer back to Memphis. I transferred to Crichton College and finished there a year later with a general degree with emphasis in Nutrition.

I got married the summer of ’06 and got my personal training and nutrition counseling licenses and then decided to attend Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. After attending graduate school for a short time I was offered a short term teaching position at my former high school. I enjoyed teaching bible to 7th grade students and through this experience realized my love for teaching. I got pregnant and had my first daughter Annabelle Joy Fisher in ‘08. Shortly after having Annabelle, my husband, Adam was offered a job as a worship leader for a new church plant in Marysville Ohio. We moved to Ohio in January of ’09 and had another baby girl in December of ’09. We love living in Ohio because the need for gospel is so prevalent here; we enjoy talking and sharing Jesus with people as much as we possibly can.

I feel like a day of blogging cannot do my experience at Ouachita justice; there are so many more stories and pictures. Nothing has shaped my life as much as my experience at OBU. I would not trade my time there for anything in the world. I am so thankful for all the things the lasting friendships that I made and the experiences I had there. Thanks OBU for the wonderful memories!

Ashley, you are the cutest thing ever!! I didn't know you cheered at OBU. How much fun!! You are adorable! Macy is doing Tiger Tunes this year. :) They had 140 people who wanted to do it but only could take 70 so they had to draw names. I'm so glad her name was drawn...I think it will be so good for her!! Love you, sweetie! Can't wait to see you over Thanksgiving!! YAY!!! :)
